In my experience, about 80% of students' lack of long-term motivation stems from uncertainty or confusion about WHY they are doing the job. Where are their efforts going? Helping students find a link between their long-term aspirations and their current academic efforts can create a clear connection and a clear end goal for students to look to if they ever feel unmotivated or question the usefulness of their efforts.
