Taking an active role and interest in students' work does not mean that parents should help them with certain topics or teach them in any way. Instead, you can ask them about their schoolwork and assignments. How do they feel about schoolwork? How do they deal with it? Do they struggle with certain topics in particular?
And if they have problems, parents can advise the students to email their teachers or notify their teachers. Also, be sure to follow them up and see how they are doing each day and if they are still concerned. As a general rule of thumb, when students feel that their parents are involved and concerned about their progress in school, they often attach intrinsic importance to their studies and, as a result, pay more attention to their schoolwork.
