Taking an active role and taking an interest in the student's schoolwork does NOT mean helping them with certain topics or teaching them in any way. Instead, ask them about their homework and assignments. How do they feel about it? How are they? Are there certain topics they struggle with?
If they have any problems, advise them to email their tutors or notify their tutors. Be sure to check in with them after each session to see how they did today and what their concerns are. As a general rule of thumb, when students feel that parents are involved and aware of their progress in school, they often attach intrinsic importance to their studies and (as a result) pay more attention to their schoolwork.
